On the night of October 19, 1908, some of the Night Riders kidnapped two of the company’s officers, Quinton Rankin and R. Z. Taylor, from Ward’s Hotel in Walnut Log. Rankin was murdered; Taylor escaped into swampland and was rescued the next day. Governor Malcolm Patterson called in the Tennessee National Guard to quell the violence and identify and capture the Night Riders. By the end of October, almost one hundred alleged members of the group were assembled in a makeshift camp. Six of them were convicted and sentenced to death, but their conviction was overturned by the state supreme court in 1909.
